ROOTS™ UNIVERSAL RAI® Rotary Positive Displacement Blowers
Universal RAI blowers are heavy duty blowers designed with detachable rugged steel mounting feet that permit easy in-field adaptability to either vertical or horizontal installation requirements.
Because of the detachable mounting feet, these units can be easily adapted to any of four drive shaft positions - right hand, left hand, bottom or top. The compact, sturdy design is engineered for continuous service when operated in accordance with speed and pressure ratings.
The basic model consists of a cast iron casing and cast iron involute impellers. Carburized and ground alloy steel spur timing gears are secured to the steel shafts with a taper mounting and locknut. Oversized antifriction bearings are used, with a cylindrical roller bearing at the drive shaft to withstand V-belt pull.
The Universal RAI features thrust control, with splash oil lube on the gear end and grease lube on the drive end. After standard tests, the unit is sprayed with a protective paint and boxed or placed on skids.
STRONGEST WARRANTY IN THE INDUSTRY- ROOTS™ Universal RAI® blowers are warranted for two years plus an additional 6 months for shipping and construction where required.

The basic model features a cast-iron casing with a computer-designed cast relief for noise and shock suppression, carburized and ground alloy steel spur timing gears secured to steel shafts with a taper mounting and locknut, and cast-iron involute impellers. Oversized anti-friction bearings are used with a cylindrical roller bearing at the drive shaft to withstand V-belt pull. Detachable rugged steel mounting feet permit easy in-field adaptablility to either vertical or horizontal installation requirements.
The Universal RAI-J® incorporates grease lube on the drive end and splash lube on the gear end.
LOWER AIR PULSATION - Patented WHISPAIRTM blowers operate with up to 40% less pressure pulsation than conventional blowers due to the pressure equalizing effect of the WHISPAIRTM jet design. In conventional blowers, as the impeller opens up to the outlet port, the higher pressure air in the discharge line rapidly expands into the lower pressure pocket formed by the impeller and the blower case. The resulting shock wave strikes the advancing surface of the impeller at near-sonic velocity. Four pressure pulses occur during each revolution, transmitting shock loads to the gear and bearings.
LONGER BEARING LIFE- The pre-pressurization of the low pressure pocket through the WHISPAIR jet cavity smooths the pulsations, resulting in less shock being transmitted through the impellers to the bearings, providing longer bearing life.
LOWER VIBRATION- The reduction in the magnitude of the pressure pulsation results in smoother operation.
LOWER NOISE- The pressure pulses, inherent in the rotary-lobe design, are also the major source of blower noise. The rapid backflow of air into the blower from the discharge line, four times per revolution, results in high noise levels in a conventional blower. The WHISPAIR jet design controls the backflow of air into the blower, reducing noise by approximately 5 dBA vaccum, 3 dB pressure.

RAM™ stands for Reliability, Availability and Maintainability. Today, more than ever, Roots is committed to supplying our customers with reliable products manufactured with state-of-the-art CNC machine tools. Production and inventory are being scheduled and controlled to ensure these units will be available when you need them. Design improvements such as repositionable rugged steel mounting feet and die-cast aluminum drive end covers and gear covers help to reduce installation costs and make normal maintenance easier.
BASIC BLOWER DESCRIPTION- RAM™ rotary blowers are heavy-duty units designed with integral-shaft ductile iron impellers having an involute profile. The headplates and rigid, one-piece casing are grey iron, while the drive end cover and gear cover are aluminum. Carburized and ground alloy steel spur timing gears are taper mounted on the shafts, secured with a locknut. Cylindrical roller bearings are used on all units. Piston rings reduce air leakage through the shaft openings in the headplates, and lip-type oil seals prevent lubricant from entering the air chamber. A hydrodynamic seal on the drive shaft prevents shaft seal oil leaks.
RAM rotary blowers incorporate thrust control, with splash oil lubrication at both ends of the blower. All frame sizes are designed with detachable rugged steel mounting feet which permit in-field adaptability to either vertical or horizontal installation requirements. The top shaft is extended for drive on side outlet blowers, and either shaft can be extended for drive on top or bottom outlet blowers.

BASIC BLOWER DESCRIPTION- RCS rotary blowers are heavy-duty units designed with integral- shaft ductile iron impellers having an involute profile. The headplates, gear cover, end cover and rigid, one-piece casing are grey iron. Carburized and ground alloy steel spur timing gears are taper mounted on the shafts, secured with a locknut. Cylindrical roller bearings are used on the drive end with ball bearings on the gear end.
Piston rings reduce air leakage through the shaft openings in the headplates, and lip-type oil seals prevent lubricant from entering the air chamber. The RCS incorporates thrust control, with splash oil lubrication at both ends of the blower. All units are designed with detachable rugged steel mounting feet which permit in-field adaptability to either vertical or horizontal installation requirements.
The top shaft is extended for drive on side outlet blowers, and either shaft can be extended for drive on top or bottom outlet blowers. All frame sizes are center-timed to allow rotationin either direction. Two figure-eight lobe impellers mounted on parallel shafts rotate in opposite directions. As each impeller passes the blower inlet, it traps a definite volume of air and carries it around the case to the blower outlet, where the air is discharged. With constant speed operation the displaced volume is essentially the same regardless of pressure, temperature or barometric pressure.
Timing gears control the relative position of the impellers to each other and maintain small but definite clearances. This allows operation without lubrication being required inside the air casing.

Incoming air is trapped by the impellers. Simultaneously, pressurized air (right) is being discharged. As the lower impeller passes wrap-around flange, Whispair jet equalizes pressure between trapped air and discharge area, aiding impeller movement and reducing power. Impellers move air into the discharge area (right). Backflow is controlled, resulting in reduction of noise relative to conventional blowers.
